Noise

Generally all statistical fluctuations on the output of an optical detector are referred as noise. This noise can be separated into a temporal fluctuation and a fluctuation related to the spatial position of a two dimensional sensor. Temporal fluctuations are related to the dark noise of the sensor and the shot noise caused by the statistical uncertainty of the number of photoelectrons. CCD and CMOS sensors additionally might show Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN) that is related to the pixel position. This fixed pattern noise is from the physical point of view a deterministic signal, that may be compensated completely by mathematical operations.
